At DOT, every day is Earth Day

Happy Earth Day, everyone! At DOT, we're working every day to better protect our planet – and I know Fast Lane readers are, too.

America's transportation system accounts for 1/3 of our greenhouse gas emissions, more than 1/2 of our nitrogen oxide emissions, and almost 3/4 of our oil consumption. Greening that system is central to our nation’s efforts to increase sustainability and reduce climate change.

That’s why DOT is so focused on building more efficient, sustainable transportation. We're building marine highways that can cut greenhouse gas emissions; investing in a NextGen air traffic control system to lower aviation fuel consumption; building more capacity in our rail systems, which can be a more sustainable way to move both people and freight; and we’re helping drivers save money and lower their carbon footprint, too...

Transportation Investment and Economic Mobility

With the U.S. population projected to grow by 90 million people over the next 30 years, and strong evidence that access to affordable transportation plays a significant role in social and economic mobility, we must face this challenge head on. Even in a difficult fiscal and political climate.

But, let's remember one of the key lessons in American history: challenging times can present opportunities to find new allies, a fresh vision, and creative, new approaches to long-standing problems . I am proud to say that this Department is pressing forward in a number of exciting and transformative policy areas. And yesterday, at the launch of Transportation For America's (T4A) new alliance to help revitalize our nation's investment in transportation, I highlighted one of my favorites --Ladders of Opportunity.

As a former mayor, Transportation Secretary Foxx is especially focused on transportation investments and policies that connect people safely to jobs, education, and health care; that grow local economies and the U.S. economy; and that improve quality of life.

Learning the True Costs of Living in a Community

Relocating can be one of the most exciting and important decisions a family or individual makes.

When families relocate, they’re choosing more than just a house or apartment: they are also selecting the schools, job opportunities, green spaces and other characteristics that come with that community.   And, at the center of it all is a community’s transportation network because people need to get to work, kids need to get to school, and families need to get to critical services.

That’s why, HUD and DOT have launched the Location Affordability Portal, a user-friendly tool that helps consumers calculate the true cost of their combined housing and transportation expenses, helping them make more informed decisions about where to live and work.

Transit access, information helps keep seniors mobile

Our nation is undergoing a significant demographic shift. By 2050, the number of Americans aged 65 and older will more than double, while those 85 and older could increase fivefold. This population can face challenges that include increased poverty, isolation, and difficulty accessing medical care.

Goldsboro, NC, welcomes DOT's TIGER to downtown

We are elated that DOT has recognized the potential of our continued efforts to revitalize our community through downtown investment here in Goldsboro, North Carolina.  The TIGER grant award of $10 million to Goldsboro for our Main Street Revitalization project is nothing short of amazing.

Our project partners livability and transportation infrastructure needs into one effort that--when coupled with our national Main Street™--approach towards downtown revitalization, will result in immense returns for Goldsboro. We are very fortunate to have had the foresight through leadership and dedication that prepared us to be competitive enough to earn this significant award from DOT's TIGER program. And we are especially grateful for DOT having the confidence to invest in us.
