DOT turns to you with Data Innovation Challenge

You've seen the apps. The commuter at the bus stop is using one. The father shopping for a safe car is using one. The student booking spring break bus travel is using one. I'm not talking about Plants vs. Zombies or Candy Crush 2; I'm talking about the apps that put useful transportation information --real-time transit arrivals, 5-star car safety ratings, motorcoach safety records-- in the palms of our hands.

Although good transportation apps have been created, we also know that a nation like ours can do more.

That's why, today, we're launching our Data Innovation Challenge.

Air Force officer wins RAISE Award with aviation collision avoidance system

Each year, DOT and the Federal Aviation Administration sponsor the Secretary's RAISE Award (Recognizing Aviation and Aerospace Innovation in Science and Engineering) to encourage high school, college and university students to think creatively and develop innovative solutions to aviation challenges.

The ability to move people and cargo safely and efficiently from coast to coast and everywhere in between means that America's aviation system not only contributes directly to our economy; it also helps the nation's non-aviation businesses compete economically. If we want our aviation system--and our economy--to remain competitive, we must aim high and innovate. And that means we need students who are trained in science, technology, engineering, and math.

This year's RAISE Award winner, Kyle Smith, and the collision avoidance system he proposed are exactly what American aviation needs to continue raising the bar worldwide.

DOT Seeks Student Proposals for Innovations in Aviation and Aerospace

As part of a comprehensive effort by the Obama administration to involve more of the country’s youth in science, technology, engineering and math studies, known as STEM, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) today requested proposals for its "Recognizing Aviation and Aerospace Innovation in Science and Engineering" Award from college and high school students for unique innovations in aviation and aerospace.

Challenges in Action: RITA’s Connected Vehicle Technology Challenge

The U.S. DOT thus decided to use a relatively novel method, a prize, to undertake a new program to develop new applications, devices, products, business solutions, and a range of services that improve transportation’s role in safety and quality of life.  The DOT believes that there are new approaches, partnerships and devices for using DSRC that innovators among the broader public can and will devise, if they are called to participate. In this spirit, on January 24, 2011, the Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) launched a challenge on called the “Connected Vehicle Technology Challenge”. The idea submission portion of the challenge will end on May 1, 2011.
