International Transportation Policy

DOT’s International Role

The U.S. Department of Transportation is committed to facilitating, creating and maintaining a domestic transportation system to meet the needs of U.S. citizens and the economy. It is also dedicated to advising and assisting the development of international transportation systems through interactions with partner agencies and foreign organizations, at home and abroad.

In the international arena, the Department has four objectives:

  • Increase transportation system capacity and market access;
  • Improve the safety, efficiency, and resiliency of the transportation system;
  • Promote transportation innovation; and
  • Support U.S. foreign policy initiatives through transportation technical assistance.

By increasing capacity and market access, the Department facilitates the movement of people and goods by land, air, and water. DOT advocates for regulations that are compatible across borders and works internationally to develop and enact best transportation practices.
