Peer Review of Technical Paper, "Road Departure Crash Warning Field Operational Test"

Subject and Purpose:

NHTSA study to be completed 2nd Quarter/06. As part of the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative of the USDOT, this project will place a new crash avoidance system into normal passenger car service so as to evaluate its performance, accelerate its commercial deployment, and assess its benefits on the basis of naturalistic, empirical evidence. The system in question is intended to reduce the disproportionate toll in death and injury that is claimed each year through road-departure crashes.

Peer Review Plan: 

The Peer Review Plan includes the following elements:

(1) The peer review would occur during the 2nd/3rd quarter of Fiscal Year 2006.

(2) The peer review will be conducted by individual letters from   selected DOT employees.

(3) There will not be an opportunity for the public to comment on the work before it is peer reviewed.

(4) Public comments will not be available to the peer reviewers.

(5) There will be at least three peer reviewers.

(6) Reviewers should have expertise in such areas as statistics, engineering, and vehicle safety.

(7) The reviewers will be selected by the agency.

(8) The public will not be asked to nominate peer reviewers.
