Injury Criteria for Side Impact Dummies

Subject and Purpose:

Crashworthiness – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration developed injury criteria and associated threshold levels for use with side impact dummies for assessing injury potential in recent upgrade to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 214 side impact protection.  This project will influence a rulemaking (FMVSS No. 214) that will have impacts that exceed the $500 million threshold.  The technical document for peer review, “Injury Criteria for Side Impact Dummies,” has been placed in the docket on May, 2004 (NHTSA docket number 17694) and is available to the public at http://dmses.dot.gov/docimages/pdf89/285284_web.pdf

Peer Review Plan: 

The Plan is still being developed.  The preliminary plan includes the following elements:

(1) The peer review would occur in the second half of Fiscal Year 2005.

(2) The review will be conducted by individual letters.

(3) The public has commented on the technical document and other aspects of the notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM), which are also available in docket number 17694. 

(4) NHTA has summarized the public comments to the technical document. The peer reviewers can access the comments to the notice for proposed rulemaking at http://dms.dot.gov.  

(5) We will have three peer reviewers.

(6) The peer reviewers should have expertise in biomechanic research.

(7) The plan for selecting peer reviewers is still under development.

(8) The public will not be asked to nominate peer reviewers.
