WHAT WE DO

The Office enforces the Department's aviation economic and civil rights requirements and provides legal review and support on aviation economic licensing matters.  Our responsibilities in this area include the following:

● handling of informal consumer complaints involving aviation economic regulatory issues and publishing the Department's monthly Air Travel Consumer Report

● providing guidance to the industry and educating the public on their rights and responsibilities involving aviation consumer protection matters

● enforcement of consumer protection regulations, such as baggage liability rules, denied boarding compensation, on-time performance requirements, public charter rules, deceptive ads, and other unfair and deceptive practices

● enforcement of prohibitions against undue discrimination, including those involving disabled air travelers and security-related discrimination by airlines

● enforcement of Department licensing requirements against carriers engaged in unauthorized domestic or foreign air transportations

● legal review of domestic airline licensing matters

In addition, the Office acts as the prosecutor in cases conducted under the Program Fraud Civil Remedies Act to obtain penalties for false statements or false claims made to OST.
