DC BAR PRO BONO PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Family Court Self-Help Center Pilot Project The Family Court Self-Help Center Pilot Project provides volunteer attorneys and paralegals to assist pro-se litigants in the Domestic Relations and Paternity & Support Branches of the Family Court of the District of Columbia Superior Court. This is a great opportunity for attorneys and paralegals to provide direct pro bono legal services with only a limited time commitment. We need volunteers who are interested in assisting pro se litigants with family law problems. No particular expertise is required. Volunteers will be provided with sufficient training, substantive information and manuals to use in assisting pro se litigants. The Pilot Project: Volunteers will assist pro se litigants by helping litigants complete court forms, providing educational materials, providing detailed information on Family Court rules and procedure, preparing child support calculations and providing referrals to legal service providers and community agencies. Volunteers also will provide information about free legal clinics, as well as how to find an attorney, and how to access free or low-fee legal services. Volunteers will work in teams of three. At least one of the volunteers will be an experienced family law practitioner. When
and Where? Mondays:
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Training: A three-hour training course is provided for volunteers. Training for individual law firms, government agencies, organizations, voluntary bars and DC Bar Sections can be specially arranged. Volunteers are requested to commit to at least two four-hour shifts during the Pilot Project. A monthly or bi-monthly commitment from each volunteer or law firm would allow the Pilot Project to operate 5 days per week and would be of great assistance to the Washington, D.C. community. To arrange a Pilot Project training or to sign up for volunteer sessions, please contact Valeric Despres at the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program at (202) 737-4700 x 295 or by email at vdespres@dcbar.org.
