The Southwest Region Small Business Transportation Resource Center (SW SBTRC), operated by the California Asian Pacific Chamber of Commerce, serves the small business contracting community in Arizona, California, Hawaii, and Nevada. The goal of the SW SBTRC is to increase the ability of small businesses to compete for and enter into transportation-related contracts at the local, state and federal levels throughout the region. Headquartered in Sacramento, the SW SBTRC assists small and disadvantaged businesses in the region by providing procurement, technical, financial and bonding assistance.
Since its inception, the SW SBTRC has assisted more than 1,200 companies with technical and procurement assistance, including assistance to businesses seeking Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) certification and/or SBA 8(a) certification. The SW SBTRC provides financial assistance through the US DOT Short Term Lending Program and has also conducted six Bonding Education Program (BEP) workshop series in the cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area, Las Vegas, Sacramento, Honolulu and most recently, Fresno, CA.
The focus of the Fresno BEP was to work with small business contractors in the Central Valley in preparation for the start of construction of the California High-Speed Rail project. In 2014, the SW SBTRC has planned a series of BEP workshops in both Southern California and Phoenix to work with small businesses on the billions of dollars-worth of transportation projects in the pipeline.
The SW SBTRC also executes the U.S. DOT’s Women In Transportation Initiative (WITI), formerly called the DOT Women and Girls Internship Program. WITI places motivated female students into the transportation industry, while also focusing on outreach to women-owned small businesses. The SW SBTRC has established program partnerships with over 20 universities and colleges for their students to receive credit for participating in WITI. To date, the SW SBTRC has had over 60 female students participate in internships at transportation agencies, large transportation prime contractors and small businesses throughout the southwest region.
