St. Croix River Crossing at Stillwater - Minnesota and Wisconsin

This project consists of a new National Highway System crossing of the St. Croix River, a Federally designated Wild and Scenic River that divides Minnesota and Wisconsin. The existing bridge, known as the Stillwater Lift Bridge, was built in 1931 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. However, the Lift Bridge will soon require substantial investments to keep it operating. The narrow widths and functional deficiencies of the approach roadways are also of concern, because the traffic on these roadways operates at or above capacity.

The Environmental Impact Statement process has resulted in the identification of a “Preferred Alternative” package that features a new four-lane bridge, conversion of the Lift Bridge to a pedestrian/bicycle facility, and a set of mitigation measures to address natural, social, and cultural impacts.
