Interstate 5 North Coast - California

The proposed project aims to reduce current congestion and meet future traffic needs along the I-5 North Coast corridor. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is proposing to improve approximately 26 miles of Interstate 5 from San Diego to Oceanside and a 2-mile segment of Interstate 805 in San Diego. Improvements will include the addition of High Occupancy Vehicle/Managed lanes, and additional general purpose and auxiliary lanes where needed for capacity and merging traffic. These lanes will enhance mobility for carpools, buses, and the movement of goods between Mexico, San Diego, and the Los Angeles area.

The environmental impact study for this project is particularly concerned with the impacts of the proposed improvements to wetlands and associated endangered or threatened species. I-5 runs parallel to the coast and crosses five different coastal lagoon areas. The study will also evaluate impacts to community cohesion and connectedness. Throughout the development of the environmental impact statement, Caltrans is working with federal, state, and local agencies and the public to find ways to reduce, avoid, or mitigate for these impacts.
