Brief History of the Department of Transportation

The Department of Transportation (DOT) was established by an act of Congress on October 15, 1966. The Department’s first official day of operation was April 1, 1967.

Mission of the Department of Transportation

The mission of the Department is to: Serve the United States by ensuring a fast, safe, efficient, accessible and convenient transportation system that meets our vital national interests and enhances the quality of the American people, today and into the future.

The Mission of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Budget and Programs, and CFO:

Is to serve the Secretary of Transportation and the Department on issues relating to budget, resources, financial management, and accounting and financial information systems.

The Vision of the Assistant Secretary for Budget and Programs, and CFO:

Is to provide leadership and advice to the Secretary in the development, implementation, and administration of the Department’s resources. The office is committed to continually improving the financial management of DOT’s programs and operations.
