U.S. Transportation Secretary Mineta Announces $2.4 Million
for Denver Avenue Transit Station

Tulsa area residents will soon enjoy improved transit facilities as a result of a grant announced today by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta.

“The Bush administration is committed to building a safe, secure and reliable transportation system that operates efficiently, strengthens the economy and improves our quality of life,” Secretary Mineta said.  “This investment will allow even more residents in the Tulsa area to enjoy the many benefits of public transportation, including increased community mobility, reduced traffic congestion and protection of the environment.”

Representative John Sullivan (OK-1st) added, “We are very pleased with the award of this grant.  Transportation is of dire concern to our economic infrastructure.   People cannot earn a living if they are without transportation to their jobs and this award will open several opportunities to those in need of a ride.”

The $2,475,787 grant will pay for improved access, mobility and pedestrian linkages to the downtown transit facilities and intercity bus transportation destinations.  The Denver Avenue Transit Station, constructed in 1997, will be the focus of the streetscape improvements, which serves the mobility needs of transit patrons linking to improved and attractive downtown destination points.  These improvements will include sidewalks constructed to ADA standards, wheelchair ramps, bus shelters, lighting, and street furniture.
