U.S. Transportation Secretary Mineta Announces $1.6 Million for Kentucky

      Funding to buy new vehicles and equipment for six Kentucky transit systems was announced today by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta. 

      “The Bush administration is committed to building a safe, secure and reliable transportation system that operates efficiently, strengthens the economy and improves our quality of life,” Secretary Mineta said.  “This investment will allow even more residents in Kentucky to enjoy the many benefits of public transportation, including increased community mobility, reduced traffic congestion and protection of the environment.”

      “Investing in and maintaining a modernized infrastructure will keep Central Kentucky well positioned to attract businesses and economic development.  Transportation services are very important to the folks in Central Kentucky.  There is always a need for funding that will improve transit services, especially to help people without other means of transportation,” emphasized U.S. Congressman Ernie Fletcher (KY-6th).  “It is my hope that this important federal funding will help keep Kentucky moving well into the 21st Century.”

      The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will receive a $1,609,228 grant, which it will distribute to six transit systems.  Five systems provide service to rural areas and one provides service to the elderly or disabled community of the Lexington area.  

* The Community Action of Lexington/Fayette will receive 3 new vans for transit service in Bourbon, Harrison and Nicholas counties.

* The Bluegrass Community Action Council will receive communication equipment for its administrative offices and 12 new vans for transit service in its 11 county service area.

*  The Lexington Red Cross Wheels will receive 10 vans for its paratransit system for the elderly and disabled in the Lexington Fayette county area. 

* Paducah Transit Authority will receive a 30-foot bus, five vans and seven support vehicles for rural service in Paducah and McCracken counties.

* Fulton County transit will receive 5 vans to for transit service in Fulton, Hickman and Graves counties.  

* Frankfort Transit System will receive security gates and shelters for its bus garage/maintenance facility.
