U.S. Transportation Secretary Mineta Announces $4 Million For Enhanced
Transit Services in Portland, OR
Residents in and around Portland, OR, will
benefit from enhanced transit services as a result of two grants announced today
by U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta.
“The Bush administration is committed to building a safe, secure and
reliable transportation system that operates efficiently, strengthens the
economy and improves our quality of life,” said Secretary Mineta. “This
investment will allow even more residents in the Portland area to enjoy the many
benefits of public transportation, including increased community mobility,
reduced traffic congestion and protection of the environment.”
A $2,129,942 grant will support the Job Access and Reverse Commute (JARC)
program. The program provides transportation and employment-related services
for low-income residents in the Portland area seeking access to regional job
centers, job-training programs and educational facilities.
Another $1,967,357 grant will be used by the Metropolitan Transportation
District of Oregon to buy eight low-floor, air-conditioned, forty-foot
replacement buses. The purchase is part of a bus replacement program totaling
25 buses.
