U.S. Transportation Secretary Announces $11 Million Transit Grant to
Minnesota
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta today announced an $11 million
grant in Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funds to Metro Transit, which is
operated by the Metropolitan Council, for the purchase of 56 new buses for the
Minneapolis-St Paul region.
“President Bush has proposed $7.2 billion for the Federal
Transit Program as part of the FY 2003 budget, further reinforcing the
Administration’s commitment to efficient public transportation as a strategic
investment,” said Secretary Mineta. “This
grant strengthens that commitment and will help the Metro Transit provide safe
and reliable transit services to the residents of the Minneapolis-St. Paul
region and surrounding areas.”
The grant awarded today, in the amount of $11,763,923, will be used to purchase 56 new buses, replacing older buses that have reached the end of their useful life, offering cleaner and more attractive transit service for the Minneapolis-St. Paul region.
