U.S. Transportation Secretary Mineta Announces $1.3 Million Grant for Chatham County and Savannah Buses
SAVANNAH,
GA -- U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta, at a press availability
with Congressman Max Burns (GA-12), today announced a $1.3 million grant to the
Georgia Department of Transportation to help toward the purchase of 31 buses
currently serving Savannah and Chatham County.
"The
U.S. Department of Transportation is pleased to partner with Congressman Max
Burns and the Georgia Department of Transportation to provide common sense
transit solutions to residents throughout the Savannah area," said
Secretary Mineta. "This grant
reflects the Bush Administration's commitment to transportation as a strategic
investment that strengthens the economy, protects the environment and maximizes
the freedom of mobility for all Americans."
Following
a tour of the Port of Savannah, Secretary Mineta presented a ceremonial check
for $1.3 million to Congressman Burns and Jean Iaderosa, director of development
for the Chatham Area Transit Authority, who accepted it behalf of the Georgia
Department of Transportation.
"These
buses allow even more people to experience the many benefits of public
transportation, including a healthier economy, increased community mobility,
reduced congestion, energy conservation, and protection of the environment,
" said Rep. Burns. "These
31 new buses only enhance the quality of service Chatham Area Transit Authority
provides to the citizens of Savannah."
