DOT Announces $9.9 Million To Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority (Sound Transit)

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta today announced that the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is providing $9.9 million in funding to the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority (Sound Transit) for the Sounder Commuter Rail Project.

“The grant awarded today represents the Bush Administration’s commitment to transportation as a strategic investment that strengthens the economy, protects the environment and maximizes the freedom of mobility for all Americans,” said Secretary Mineta.

The funds provided today, in the amount of $9,900,131, will be used for right-of-way acquisition for station construction along Sound Transit’s Tacoma-to-Lakewood commuter rail segment.  The project includes two stations in Tacoma and one station in Lakewood.  A park-and-ride facility is also included at state Route 512.

FTA Administrator Jennifer Dorn stated, “The FTA is pleased to partner with Sound Transit to provide common sense transit solutions to residents throughout the Tacoma area.  The Tacoma-to-Lakewood commuter rail segment will allow even more people to experience the many benefits of public transportation, including a healthier economy, increased community mobility, reduced congestion, energy conservation, and protection of the environment.”
