U.S. Department Of Transportation Provides $4.8 Million for Transit in
Charlotte
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) today announced a $4.8 million grant to
the city of Charlotte for continued construction of its South Tyron transit
facility. The new facility will enable the city and Charlotte Area Transit
System (CATS) to better serve this rapidly growing area as public transportation
service continues to expand.
“Sound transportation investments improve service and contribute to economic
development,” said FTA Administrator Jennifer L. Dorn. “Today, the Bush
Administration does its part to help Charlotte meet its future transit needs as
its size and economy continue to grow.”
Located on a 25-acre site near downtown Charlotte, North Carolina, the new
facility will relieve overcrowded conditions at the North Davidson facility,
which has the capacity to service only 200 buses out of the 317 CATS owns. When
completed, South Tyron will become the CATS primary transit facility with the
capacity to maintain and operate as many as 250 buses.
The facility also will include an administrative building to accommodate daily
operations as well as a body shop, bus washers and paint booths.
