$3 Million Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation Keeps Milwaukee Metropolitan Area Buses Rolling

Wisconsin residents will soon enjoy improved bus service as a result of a $3,046,347 million federal grant awarded to the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS), Federal Transit Administrator Jennifer L. Dorn announced today.

The MCTS, which provides services to 17 municipalities in the Milwaukee metropolitan area, will use the grant to buy thirteen 40-foot replacement buses and spare parts, and pay labor and inspection costs. The average lifespan for buses is 12 years.

“We’re keeping Wisconsin moving so that workers can get to their jobs, shoppers to stores, and family members to their homes,” said Administrator Dorn. “This investment will ensure that the residents of the Milwaukee area continue to enjoy the benefits of public transportation, including increased community mobility, reduced traffic congestion and environmentally friendly transit.”

The fixed-route bus system offers residents access to employment centers, hospitals and other local attractions. The new buses will provide enhanced service to all riders, reduce air pollution and maintenance costs, and increase fuel efficiency, Administrator Dorn said.

The funds announced today are part of the FTA’s capital investment program that provides financial assistance for transit agencies to purchase new buses and enhancements.
