U.S. Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater today announced $19.9 million in Federal Transit Administration funding for the Fort Worth Transportation Authority (the T). The funds will be used to extend the Trinity Railway Express, a 35-mile commuter rail line that will connect Fort Worth and Dallas.
"President Clinton and Vice President Gore are committed to investing in transportation, which will strengthen the economy, protect the environment for generations to come and make resources like jobs, health care, education, and recreation accessible to all, Secretary Slater said. Like other transit projects funded under the landmark TEA-21 (Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century), the Fort Worth project will showcase how transit helps us use our investments wisely, maintain a good quality of life and produce a robust economy as we increasingly move toward smart growth and sustainable development.
The first 10-mile, three-station segment, running from Dallas to Irving, was completed by the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Authority and opened for service in December 1996. The T will construct the final 25 miles from Irving to Fort Worth. The grant announced today will fund the Intermodal Transportation Center building/Ninth Street Station in Fort Worth, the CenterPort Station in the mid cities area, a tunnel through the historic Alarm Supply building and a new rail bridge over the Trinity Railway Express line for freight traffic.
