U.S. Department
of Transportation Announces $5.4 Million Grant for South Bend Public
Transportation
SOUTH BEND, IN -- U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman
Y. Mineta today announced a $5.4 million grant to the South Bend Public
Transportation Corporation (TRANSPO). The
grant will be used to replace 23 Flxible diesel buses.
“This grant reflects the Bush Administration’s
commitment to transportation as a strategic investment that strengthens the
economy, protects the environment and maximizes the freedom of mobility for all
Americans,” said Secretary Mineta.
During a press conference in South Bend, IN, Federal Transit Administrator Jennifer L. Dorn and U.S. Representative Chris Chocola (IN-2) presented a ceremonial check for $5.4 million to TRANSPO.
“The FTA is pleased to partner with TRANSPO to provide common sense transit solutions to residents throughout the South Bend/Mishawaka area,” said Administrator Dorn. “These new buses will allow even more people to experience the many benefits of public transportation, including a healthier economy, increased community mobility, reduced congestion, energy conservation, and protection of the environment.”
“This
grant will go a long way in the city of South Bend and Mishawaka, literally,”
said Rep. Chocola. “These 23 new
buses will only enhance the already quality service TRANSPO provides to the
citizens of South Bend and Mishawaka.”
The funds, in the amount of $5,446,018, will be used to replace 23 Flxible diesel buses that have been in continuous service since 1987 in the South Bend Public Transit fixed route system. The new fleet, which will include improved accessibility for persons with disabilities, cleaner-burning engines, camera/security systems, electronic fare boxes, and improved lighting for safety and visibility, will increase ridership throughout the service area, and will provide safer and more reliable transportation for all passengers.
