Under Secretary Shane to Keynote National Intelligent Vehicle Initiative Meeting
On
June 25 at 11:30 a.m. in the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC, Jeffrey
N. Shane, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Under Secretary for Policy,
will address a group of government and industry leaders on intelligent vehicle
technologies.
Shane's
keynote address will follow a panel discussion from 9-11:30 a.m.
Senior U.S. Department of Transportation officials will discuss the
benefits to be obtained from technologies that result from the intelligent
vehicle initiative.
Intelligent
vehicle technologies prevent crashes by helping drivers avoid hazardous
mistakes.
The
Bush Administration's 2003 surface transportation reauthorization proposal - the
Safe, Accountable, Flexible, and Efficient Transportation Equity Act of 2003 (SAFETEA),
requests almost $1.7 billion in
Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) funding over six years beginning Oct. 1,
2003. The Department's support for
intelligent highway and vehicle development is part of its ITS program, a 20
percent increase over the current funding level.
