U.S. Transportation Secretary Mineta Announces $14.4 Million for Washington Dulles International Airport
U.S.
Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta today announced a grant of $14.4
million to Washington Dulles International Airport to rehabilitate a runway.
The rehabilitation of Runway 12/30 is needed to repair damage to the pavement
and bring it up to the standards needed to accommodate today’s aircraft. This
runway, one of three at the airport, has been in continuous service since it was
completed in 1962.
“Washington Dulles is one of the nation’s fastest-growing airports, and this
grant will help it continue to maintain the highest standards of safety as it
prepares for future increases in air traffic,” Secretary Mineta said. “Today’s
announcement is good news for Dulles travelers and for the economy of the
national capital region.”
The rehabilitation project will include pavement demolition, reconstruction,
drainage, marking, in-pavement lighting and environmental improvements for the
entire length of the 10,500-foot runway. Federal funds will cover 75 percent of
the total costs of the project.
The grant comes from the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) of the U.S.
Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration. Nearly $140
million in AIP funding has been provided to the Metropolitan Washington Airports
Authority for development at Dulles since the authority was created in 1987.
