DOT Issues Report On International Air Passenger and Freight Statistics

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) today issued a report, based on information from DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics, showing that air passenger and freight traffic between the United States and other countries showed strong growth during the 12 months ending June 2000.

The report summarizes air traffic between the United States and all world regions as well as the top 25 foreign nations in terms of passengers, seat capacity and freight. It also lists the top 40 U.S. international gateway airports, the top 40 foreign gateway airports to the United States, and the 40 U.S.-foreign city pairs with the heaviest passenger traffic.

DOT’s report, U.S. International Air Passenger and Freight Statistics, shows that U.S. and foreign air carriers transported 137 million passengers between the United States and the rest of the world for the year ending June 2000. This represents an increase of 6.9 percent over the previous year. U.S. and foreign airlines hauled 7.9 million freight tons to and from the United States that year, a 4.9 percent increase from the previous 12 months.

The top five foreign countries in passenger traffic to and from the United States were, in order, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Japan and Germany. For freight traffic, the top five foreign destinations were Japan, the United Kingdom, Korea, Germany and Taiwan.

Africa and the Middle East experienced the fastest rates of nonstop passenger growth to and from the United States for the year. However, Europe remains the largest region in terms of both U.S. passenger and freight traffic.

The top U.S. international airports for passenger traffic were New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago and Newark, N.J., while the top foreign gateways for U.S. passenger traffic were London Heathrow, Tokyo, Toronto, Frankfurt, Germany, and London Gatwick.

DOT will issue information from BTS in the U.S. International Air Passenger and Freight Statistics each month. It may be obtained via the Internet at http://ostpxweb.dot.gov/aviation/international-series.
