U.S. Department of Transportation Statement
Regarding Amtrak’s FY ’05 Budget Request
“While Amtrak continues to make operational and managerial progress under the
basic financial controls requested last year by the Administration and enacted
by Congress, the Administration believes that increased federal funding for
Amtrak cannot be justified without significant reform.
“Americans expect meaningful reforms meant to improve service and accountability
for their tax dollars. The President’s proposal before Congress would accomplish
these goals and place Amtrak on a course toward long-term viability.
“And while the Administration’s budget requests $900 million for FY 2005, the
Administration would support funding of up to $1.4 billion if the significant
reforms included in the President’s plan were enacted.”
