FHWA Recognizes California, Connecticut and Missouri DOTs For Top Traffic Information Web Sites. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration have selected state department of transportation web sites in California, Connecticut and Missouri as the most innovative and helpful online tools for the public and transportation officials. California (dot.ca.gov/contractor) was selected for its new online registry that provides the state with immediate access to contractors for clean-up, repair and other emergency relief work after a natural disaster. Connecticut (conndot.ct.gov/traffic/ealerts.aspx) developed a new feature that allows users to automatically receive customized e-mail alerts on the highway or rail routes they take most often. And Missouri (modot.state.mo.us/asp/repair.htm) won for adding an easy-to-use tool for drivers to report accidents and other road incidents, allowing road crews and emergency personnel to respond more quickly. U.S. Transportation Secretary Mineta Announces New Byways. U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta added 45 roads in 27 states to the America's Byways system. The designation helps local communities promote tourism and makes the roads eligible for grants that fund educational signs, restrooms, recreational amenities and other improvements. The National Scenic Byways program, administered by the Federal Highway Administration, recognizes and enhances roads based on their archaeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational or scenic qualities. More information about the program and newly designated Byways is available at www.byways.org. Contact Stephanie Roth: 202-366-0660.
