Statement from the U.S. Department of Transportation
Concerning the Inspector General Review of the Landstar Contract
“The Department, working with Landstar and thousands of truck and bus drivers
from across the nation, played a key role in supporting the relief operations
immediately following Hurricane Katrina. Everybody involved in this effort
worked hard to deliver critical supplies and evacuate thousands of people during
a very desperate situation. The Inspector General’s review is part of a process
designed to make sure taxpayers’ money is used appropriately during the response
to the hurricanes and their aftermath. We appreciate the Inspector General’s
attention to this contract and will work with his staff to ensure that
appropriate steps are taken to further improve our ability to respond to
disasters while at the same time protecting the taxpayer’s interests.”
