United States, Spain to Cooperate On Transportation Science and Technology
The United States and Spain today announced a plan to initiate an ongoing
program of cooperation and information exchange on the science and technology of
transportation.
Under a Memorandum of Intent, signed on the concluding day of the
U.S.-Spain Forum on Construction Technology in Miami, representatives of the
U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and Spain's Ministry of Development (SMOD)
intend to participate in an ongoing series of information exchanges designed to
advance both countries' transportation capabilities.
"The information shared at this week's forum, as well as in our
earlier meetings with Spanish transportation officials, demonstrates that we
have much to teach each other," said U.S. Secretary of Transportation
Norman Y. Mineta. "Future
meetings between representatives of our governments will build on these fruitful
exchanges and help both countries build safer, more secure and more efficient
transportation systems."
Topics
discussed at the two-day forum will be further explored in upcoming exchanges
between representatives of the two countries.
These include improving the design, construction and operation of
highways, tunnels, airports, air traffic control systems, high-speed rail, port
infrastructure and mass transit.
The Miami forum carried forward the work of previous U.S.-Spain forums on
transportation and housing held in November 2002 in Washington and in February
2003 in Madrid and Toledo, Spain. Participants
included officials from several DOT operating administrations, as well as their
Spanish counterparts.
