U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta

Names Deputy Director of Public Affairs

U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta today named Leonardo Alcivar as deputy director of public affairs for the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

Alcivar comes to DOT from Linden, Alschuler & Kaplan Inc., a media relations firm headquartered in New York, where he oversaw a full range of corporate, financial, nonprofit, and technology clients.

“Lenny brings an effective blend of management skill and technical expertise to the department,” said Secretary Mineta.  “His knowledge and proven abilities will help us meet our responsibilities of communicating our mission to the American public.”

As deputy director of public affairs, Alcivar will supervise and coordinate media activities, and public events at DOT and the operating administrations that report to Secretary Mineta. These include the Federal Aviation Administration, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Railroad Administration, the Maritime Administration and others.

Alcivar began his public service career as deputy press secretary for New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani where he managed daily press inquires, coordinated mayoral press conferences and organized mayoral appearances.  In 1996, he served as director of press operations for the New York City Police Department (NYPD).  As senior spokesperson for the NYPD, Alcivar developed communication strategy and coordinated media activities while supervising daily press operations for this dynamic city agency.

In 1998, Alcivar moved to the private sector, managing and coordinating a full range of account team projects for Burson-Marsteller, a multinational public relations firm.  From there he served as director of communications for AltAmerica, Inc., a multinational Internet corporation, where he supervised all levels of internal and external communications.
