Matthews Named DOT Chief Information Officer

U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta today announced the appointment of Daniel P. Matthews as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

As CIO, Matthews will serve as the principal advisor to the Secretary on matters involving information resources and information services management, and provide leadership in using information technology to achieve the department’s goals and objectives.

“Dan’s more than 30 years of experience in information technology will be invaluable to the department as we continue to enhance the efficiency and security of our information systems,” Secretary Mineta said.  “I welcome him to our team.”

Matthews comes to DOT from Savantage Financial Services, where he had served as Senior Vice President since July 2000 and was responsible for efforts to modernize the financial management systems of a number of federal agencies.  He spent most of the previous 22 years at Lockheed Martin and its predecessor Martin Marietta, most recently as Vice President where he led 1200 employees in all aspects of the company’s information technology efforts as well as its business development activities.  He previously served as the company’s Director of Advanced Marketing, director of its Dayton, OH, operations, and as a project manager.  He also was Vice President at BDM/TRW between 1994 and 1998, where he developed new business for the company’s unit working with federal agencies.  He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1971 to 1975, where he worked in logistics and computers, and afterward worked as a computer programmer in the private sector.

Matthews earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Kent College in Mandeville, LA, in 1991, and a Master of Science in business administration from Strayer College, Washington, DC, in 1996.  He also completed a 20-week course in defense systems acquisition at Defense Systems Management College, Fort Belvoir, VA, in 1991.
