SECRETARY SLATER PRESENTS
TRANSPORTATION DESIGN AWARDS

U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater today recognized 38 transportation projects around the country for their design excellence and their contribution to the nation’s transportation system and the people it serves.

"Good design means transportation facilities that help us get where we want to go safely and efficiently while enhancing the beauty and livability of our communities," Secretary Slater said at the ceremony at the National Academy of Sciences. "The design and execution of the projects we honor today display the spirit of innovation, a priority of President Clinton and Vice President Gore and the key to the success of America’s transportation systems in the 21st century."

The awards ceremony falls during National Transportation Week, a recognition of the important role transportation plays in the nation’s economy and the lives of its citizens.

The honorees were selected by a 15-member jury consisting of architects, engineers, urban planners and other design professionals. The jury chose the winning designs from among more than 260 entries based on how well they achieved one or more of the following goals: promoting safety, ensuring mobility, advancing economic growth and trade; protecting and enhancing the human and natural environment, and advancing national security. The projects also were required to demonstrate innovation, aesthetics, performance and economy.

Prior to today’s event, the most recent Design for Transportation Awards ceremony took place in February 1996.

Eleven projects received Honor Awards, representing the highest quality of design based on international standards. An additional 27 projects were recognized with Merit Awards for achieving a high level of design quality.

Awards were given to a wide range of projects, including the restoration of New York’s historic Grand Central Terminal, described at the "Holy Grail of the landmarks preservation movement; a 10-mile, non-motorized recreational trail along Columbia River Gorge in Oregon; the new terminal at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, which provides intermodal connections between roadways, rapid transit and airlines; and a new crossing station on the U.S.-Mexican border at Calexico, Calif., designed to accommodate large flows of people and goods while establishing a strong sense of its desert location.
