STATEMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY SLATER
ON SENATE MASS TRANSIT VOTE
I applaud the United States Senate for its strong, bipartisan vote today to ensure that our investment in mass transit will be allocated fairly across America and to help those making the transition from welfare to work.
Six years ago, President Clinton pledged to "rebuild America." In partnership with Congress, he has delivered on that promise, raising transportation investment to record levels and improving highways and transit service throughout the nation. Todays action builds upon this effort.
I especially commend Senators DAmato, Domenici, Harkin, Johnson, and Sarbanes, who have acted to ensure that these new resources will equally benefit urban and rural communities across America through the reauthorization of ISTEA.
I also am pleased at the strong support for President Clintons Access to Jobs proposal, which will provide flexible transportation alternatives for those making the transition from welfare rolls to payrolls. The Senates vote today is a major step forward to help them get to where the jobs are. I especially want to commend the efforts of Senators Moseley-Braun, Specter, and Santorum in this regard.
