VICE PRESIDENT GORE AND SECRETARY SLATER
ANNOUNCE AIRPORT GRANTS FOR MICHIGAN

Vice President Al Gore and Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater today announced the award of $18.4 million for improvements at airports in Michigan.

"Traffic at Michigan’s airports has helped fuel the region’s vibrant economy," said Vice President Gore. "President Clinton and I are committed to strengthening economic security and improving transportation safety. This investment is good for the economy of Michigan and our nation."

Airports receiving grants:

• Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, Detroit -- $16.1 million to construct a new runway and rehabilitate airfield lighting and signage.
• Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport, Kalamazoo -- $2 million to construct an airfield deicing facility, install a security system, rehabilitate a taxiway and construct an apron.
• Cherry Capital Airport, Traverse City -- $270,000 to install an airport beacon, remodel the terminal building, and improve drainage and an access road.

The funds come from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program.
