ANNOUNCE AIRPORT GRANTS FOR ILLINOIS
Vice President Al Gore and
Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater today announced the
award of $30 million for improvements at airports in Illinois.
"Traffic at Illinois airports has
helped fuel the regions vibrant economy," said Vice
President Gore. "President Clinton and I are committed to
strengthening economic security and improving transportation
safety. This investment is good for the economy of Illinois and
our nation."
irports receiving grants:
- Scott Air Force Base/MidAmerica
Airport, Belleville -- $14 million to develop a joint
military-civilian airport at the air force base. The
grant will provide funds to acquire aircraft rescue,
firefighting and snow removal equipment; extend a runway;
construct a taxiway, apron, road and vault; install
visual approach aids, fencing and signs; acquire land for
approaches and provide relocation assistance.
- Chicago OHare International
Airport -- $9.8 million to rehabilitate a taxiway.
- Chicago Midway Airport -- $3.2
million to remove obstructions, install a security
system, rehabilitate a runway and access road, construct
a taxiway and apron, and acquire land for development.
- Quad City International Airport,
Moline -- $1.1 million to relocate an access road.
- Williamson County Regional Airport,
Marion -- $501,335 to rehabilitate a runway and taxiway
and update the airports master plan.
In addition to individual airport
grants, the state received a block grant of $1.4 million for
various development projects at non-primary airports.
The funds come from the Federal Aviation
Administrations Airport Improvement Program.
