U.S. Senate Confirms Eugene A. Conti, Jr. as
Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy

The United States Senate this week confirmed Eugene A. Conti, Jr. as Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy.

"Gene Conti brings a rich understanding of transportation issues to this department," said Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater. "We are fortunate to have someone of Gene’s caliber in this important role."

Conti was appointed Secretary of Labor, Licensing and Regulation for the State of Maryland in October 1995, and confirmed unanimously by the Maryland State Senate in January 1996. He served as the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for Budget and Programs from 1993 until his appointment as Maryland Secretary of Labor.

Prior to his appointment at the Department of Transportation, Conti served as chief of staff to Congressman David Price.

From 1979 until early 1987, Conti was a career civil servant at the U.S. Office of Management and Budget and the U.S. Treasury Department. His public service career began as a Vista Volunteer in eastern Kentucky in 1966 following two years as an undergraduate at Georgetown University. He received his bachelor’s degree in sociology at Eastern Michigan University and a Ph.D. in anthropology and a masters in public policy at Duke University.

Conti was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is married to Jennifer Wingard and has two sons.

The Conti family has resided in Chevy Chase, Maryland, since 1980.
