James Cole, Jr.
Deputy General Counsel
James Cole, Jr. serves as the Deputy General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Transportation. There are more than 500 lawyers in the Department and its ten operating administrations.
Before joining the Department, Mr. Cole was a partner in the Corporate Department at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in New York, NY. His practice focused primarily on domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, and transactional and securities law matters. He has advised a broad range of public and private companies in a variety of industries involving transactions in the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Brazil and Argentina. Prior to joining Wachtell Lipton, Mr. Cole clerked for the Honorable Stephanie K. Seymour of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
Mr. Cole received his B.S. in Finance with honors from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1990. He received his J.D. from The University of Chicago in 1995, where he served as a comment editor of the University of Chicago Law School Roundtable.
